Marx discusses his only meeting with Kurt Weill, an interview he conducted in the late 1940's. He also describes his role in organizing the Weill-Lenya exhibition at the New York Public Library in 1976, and his work with Lotte Lenya at that time. He considers Weill's American persona (specifically, Weill's desire to leave Germany behind) as well as his relations with Lenya and with Bertolt Brecht. He recalls his impressions of The eternal road, produced in 1937. He also discusses Lenya's skills as an actress and singer.

He worked on both the Staats-Zeitung (as reporter) and Aufbau (as editor), as well as directing the theater and music programs of Goethe House in New York. Born in Austria, Lenya became an actress in Zürich, then moved to Berlin where she met and married Kurt Weill. They emigrated to the U.S. in 1935, where Lenya lived until her death a few months after this interview was recorded.
